Hi, I'm Hans

H stands for my first name, but also for Holistic and Heterogenous.

Holistic

At checkups in the hospital, such as with the diabetes convention and endocrinologist, I am always grateful for the level of attention and care given to my physical health. But I experience a lack of understanding or skill in mental aspects: stress, diabetes burnout, emotion regulation, ... and so on. Therefore, I believe that a holistic approach, which integrates all kinds of different life aspects into care delivery, is the best way for healthy blood glucose trends. Ideally, that means a collaboration between endocrinologists, diabetes conventions, psychologists and therapists.

Heterogonenous

I don't believe one type of diabetes encompasses the complexities of autoimmune disease. That's why I decided to give it my own personal name and invite you to do the same with yours!

There are, of course, many common factors among us with type 1 diabetes. But these don't encompass the unique ways we cope. My stress tolerance and handling of emotions for example are completely different from yours, and that also means that these cause stress in a different way, including their influence on blood sugar levels.

My Story

Diagnosed with diabetes type 1 at 14, I embarked on a path shaped by personal resilience and a passion for mental well-being. My academic journey began with human sciences in high school, igniting a curiosity for the complexities of human nature. This foundational knowledge set the stage for my deeper exploration into the psyche and its connection to the body.

Transitioning to Vrije Universiteit Brussel, I delved into clinical psychology, captivated by the nuances of consciousness. Immersed in a sleep lab during my internship, I uncovered the mysteries of the mind's impact on our daily lives.

Eager to expand my therapeutic repertoire, I pursued post-graduate studies in integrative psychotherapy at Educatieve Academie. This comprehensive training equipped me with diverse therapeutic modalities, allowing me to tailor my approach to each individual's needs.

Volunteering at TEJO provided hands-on experience supporting young adults, fostering resilience and emotional well-being. This experience honed my therapeutic skills and deepened my commitment to guiding others through their mental health journey.

As a clinical psychologist and integrative psychotherapist, I believe in a holistic approach to mental health, drawing from my personal experiences with diabetes type 1.

Vision
It is my goal to emphasize the need for mental health support in addition to standardized physical healthcare for diabetes type 1 patients. I aim to do so by providing online, as well as in person consultations to those who need mental support in their exercise to manage their blood glucose.
